“What a lovely home you have, Samijo,” Sadie told her later that same morning. “It’s so cozy.”

Samijo laughed. “Nah, just small.”

“Not all smaller homes are cozy. Our home is large, but I do prefer my parlor – especially when it’s full of people.”

Samijo straightened the kitchen curtains, stepped back and admired them. “I just made these. I agree, a house full of family makes it cozy no matter the size. Needless to say, we don’t have many family gatherings in this house – we’d never fit everyone.”

“I imagine not.” Sadie looked out the window at Arlan showing Harrison his new rifle. “I’m glad we came for this visit.”

“You needed to get away?”

“I admit, there’s not much ‘getting away’ with a working ranch. Thankfully, like you, we have a lot of family. Harrison’s brother Colin and his wife Belle built a house next to ours, and my father-in-law and his wife live in a cabin on the land, and our foreman and his wife. And I’m sure there’ll be other homes built as our children get older.”

“What about your married daughter – where does she live?” Samijo went to the stove. “Let’s have some tea while my children are napping.”

“Good idea. Honoria and Major live in the ranch house with us.” Sadie sat at the kitchen table. “We have four bedrooms in the main house. My daughter, Honoria, is expecting her first child late February, early March. Her baby will share a room with Savannah and the boys have their room in the attic. That leaves us with a guest room in case Duncan comes to visit.” She fiddled with a linen napkin. “Which is not as often as we’d like.”

“I found your brother-in-law and his wife to be quite pleasant. Wonderful people.”

“Yes, everyone thinks so. Duncan is so unlike his brothers – not that there’s anything wrong with Colin and Harrison,” she hastened to add. “But Duncan is different. He always has been.”

“Because he’s a duke?”

Sadie shook her head. “He was always the leader of the three, and not just because he’s the oldest.” She hung her head. “We miss him and Cozette. We just saw them about five months ago but it feels like five years.”

“I’m sure his estate keeps him very busy. Besides, that can’t be an easy trip traveling all the way from England. Why don’t you visit him? What a wonderful adventure that would be.”

“We did go once, back in ’62, and had a grand time. Honoria was only two when we went. Now she’s married and expecting her first little one.”

“Sounds like you need to make another trip,” Samijo said as she brought the teapot to the table. She followed with cups, saucers and a plate of cookies.

“We were lucky enough to see Duncan last summer when your mother-in-law and the others came for a visit. I’m not sure when we’ll get back to England again, but I’d like to.”

“I would love to see England and Europe.” Samijo began to pour. “But I’m not sure I can get Arlan to leave the farm.
